The Old Well

Magda SZABÓ

Descended from a poor aristocratic family, Magda Szabó is raised in a magical environment that charms a rather rough life. One of the bastions of her universe was imagination : "when you are not pleased with how a story ends, reinvent its ending", would her mother say - and it was the whole Aeneid she ended up rewriting! In short chapters, she narrates her findings, her disappointements, and her sweet and tender life : her mother - obviously, a fairy who had been transformed into a human being -, and her father - forever a child, etc... These recollections are like a tale: initiation story, origin story, The Old Well recounts the author’s path in life : as a reader, a dreamer, and then as a writer.
